Monday Motivator – How To Break Bad Habits

Posted by Corey Kaster on April 5, 2010

“Bad habits are like a comfortable bed, easy to get into, but hard to get out of.”

While it is true that bad habits are hard to break, I’ve noticed that my good habits are pretty hard to break, too. Once they are established, that is.

When I’m in the habit of working out in the morning, I miss it if I don’t. When I’m in the habit of getting up early, I automatically wake up early and go to bed early. When I’m in the habit of making my outbound calls first thing in the morning, I just automatically do it without thinking and it is done before I know it. You get the idea.

Our good habits feel good and, because of that, I think we tend to take our good habits for granted. So, we forget about all the things we do that really serve us – and what it took to develop the habit in the first place.

On the flip side, our bad habits don’t feel so good. Because of that we notice them. Not only do we notice them, we tend to beat ourselves up about them, which generally brings our energy down and keeps us from being as effective as we can be.

Rather than giving yourself a hard time for the habits you don’t want, try learning from the good ones by doing a little analysis. How did those good habits get started in the first place? How did you keep yourself on track until it became a habit?

Now look at a habit you’d like to change and apply the same principles that worked for you in the past. It may not happen overnight. But, if you continue to do what has worked for you before, it won’t be long before you have another habit that serves you well and helps you get more of what you want in life.

Wishing you ease in developing a new habit that brings a smile to your face —

Monday Motivator

Posted by Corey Kaster on March 8, 2010

“There are times to cultivate and create, when you nurture your world and give birth to new ideas and ventures. There are times of flourishing and abundance, when life feels in full bloom, energized and expanding. And, there are times of fruition, when things come to an end. They have reached their climax and must be harvested before they begin to fade. And finally, of course, there are times that are cold, and cutting and empty, times when the spring of new beginnings seems like a distant dream. Those rhythms in life are natural events. They weave into one another as day follows night, bringing, not messages of hope and fear, but messages of how things are.”

~ Chogyam Trungpa

This has been a week of great reminders. I am staying out on my friend’s farm, where I get to watch closely the cycles of nature. Here, in Oregon, spring is on it’s way. The robins have returned. The daffodils are blooming. The pussywillows are beginning to bud. The cherries are blossoming. And, my personal springtime favorite, daphne is filling the air with the scent of the coming spring.

Each of us, like everything in nature, is a part of the natural cycle of things. As winter comes to a close, we enter the perfect time to cultivate and create, to give birth to new ideas and ventures.

Many people I have talked to recently have seen significant changes in their lives over this past year. Many of them (maybe you?) have experienced times that have felt cold, cutting and empty. They’ve had to make difficult choices. Yet, even in the face of these challenges, many of them have remained optimistic and open to the opportunities that come with change.

As we return to spring, I invite you to embrace the possibilities that lie before you and be ready to create something new and exciting for yourself so that you continue to experience the flourishing and abundance that is a natural part of cycle of all living things.

What will that mean for you? What would you like to give birth to this spring? What do you need to change in order for that to happen? And, most important of all, what is the first step to take in making that change? Be willing to take the first step and follow that with another, and another…. Then, be ready to embrace and enjoy what you have created for yourself.

Wishing you something wonderful to smile about in 2010 —
